Make your Own Beautiful Crepe Paper Rose Flowers

18 Apr IMG_7286-5

Pink Crepe Paper Roses

I love fresh flowers in my flat for the homely touch, but this is a) expensive, if you buy the cut versions and b) deathly, if you are a un-green-fingered person like myself that eternally kills pot plants. This poesy of crepe paper roses is a cute living room/bedroom/anyroom addition for anyone needing the girly touch in their home, without the weekly expense. They are super easy to make yourself, and look fabulous and almost like the real thing. You could even go craft crazy and make a whole bouquet of flowers, different colors, the possibilities are endless! All you need is:

Pink Crepe Paper

Green Crepe Paper

Floral Tape

Wire (and wire cutters)

Flower Template from Martha Stewart.com - print template the normal size and cut the petal template a little smaller.

For a step by step how to make, check out the Green Wedding Shoes blog for the how to tutorial, where this craft project was inspired from.

What’s better than a Cross Stitch? An Animated Gif Cross Stitch!

16 Apr Skull-Movie

For my latest adventure in cross stitch, I decided to go one step further from my last craft project and make an animated gif out of my stitching. Using another Day of the Dead Sugar Skull design from the awesome Bombastitch. It’s my first animated Gif made with Adobe (rather than the India gif made with an online program), made of no less than 191 photos, with the final animation made in a combination of After Effects and Photoshop. It’s a little jumpy, both position and exposure wise, for a few reasons. Because I was stitching both in the evenings and the daytime over a two-week period, the variable light conditions meant the images needed Lightroom adjusting, which was difficult to make all 191 images exactly the same. The image moves because I don’t own a full tripod, so taking the photo at exactly the same position was also tricky. These are all excuses I know, but for a first attempt I am pretty chuffed, knowing it was a bit of a beast of a project. Expect more creative animated gifs from me in the future as my embroidery and technical skills get better…

Learning How to Crochet with The Amazings

12 Apr

Crochet Wool

“The trick is all in the holding of the wool and the needles. Once you have that right it’s easy.”

This was one of the many pearls of wisdom I learnt yesterday from Bernadette. She is an Amazing. The Amazings is a social enterprise with a brilliant idea at its core; getting retired people to teach their skills and wisdom in evening classes to those that wish to learn them. The class I dropped in on was my first in learning how to crochet, which was I wasn’t doing too well at. “You’re holding the needles wrong. Are you left handed?” No, just cack handed.

It was a small class of eager beginners, all as bimbly thumbed as myself. Learning the three basic stitches, a chain, a double crochet and a triple crochet, we were given the pattern for a granny square, with the idea in mind to finish the two-hour session with the finished piece. Our beginners techniques were humorously familiar to Bernadette, “You crochet just like my daughter, she pulls the needles closer and closer to her face until she is practically picking her nose with them.” Bernadette’s sense of humor makes this class. She teaches it with the warmth and familiarity of your own Grandma, helping you with the needles and showing her secret trick and tips. “Crocheting in the Summer is difficult as your hands get sweaty,” she tells us, “So I keep some talcum power handy.” A top tip right there.

Crochet is a skill that is a challenge to master, but once you have you can be stunningly creative with. We all gasp when Bernadette shows off her latest triple crochet weave which only took her an evening. We can all do that? The needles start cracking. The concentration in the room is fierce. One hour in and I wasn’t even able to complete a line or turn around on myself. Thankfully Bernadette was there to help me start again. “That’s the beauty of crochet, it’s easy to unravel if you make a mistake.” Except I ended up unravelling to the beginning. Twice. I’m still hopeful. I have had a dream of a Granny Square patchwork and I am going to make it.

I learnt three things last night. 1) The Amazings are amazing. 2) Bernadette is a crocheting legend, and probably has the coolest dressed grand-kids in the world thanks to herself. 3) Like Captain Hook and the Candyman, I can’t be left alone with a hook. I cause no end of hole-some terror. Maybe next time I will try making a hammock.

Craftsperation: Evelin Kasikov

10 Apr

CMYK Stitch - NFTU

This blog is getting  stitchier and craftier by the post, and this craftsperation is no exception. Evelin Kasicov is a designer that explores that unknown relationship between embroidery and print. With a background in Graphic Design and a MA from Central St Martin’s, Evelin is the inventor of CKMY embroidery. Using the colours used in the printing process (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Black) she prints a design, hand stitches to with different thicknesses and overlapping, and creates her own typographical images composed of different tints of these colours. This embroidery is not stereotypically feminine or decorative, but analytical and precise. She has had previous commissions for Wired, The Guardian, Dezeen, and produced little make your own kits at the Poundshop by Mother – which I annoyingly was at but didn’t spot, but will be will be keeping an eye on in the future. Her website is also lovely, and often shows what every nosey crafty wants to look at… the back of the work.

Arty Birthday Presents

1 Apr

It was my boyfriends birthday earlier this week. Because I, a) have such  amazing taste, b) am such a big-headed wanker, and c) have already had a few ‘where did you get that’ type questions from people, I am going to share my gifts with you all, so if you are stuck for ideas you can go and buy them too!

Ross's birthday presents

1)  Yellow and Orange Hot Dog Scarf by Lazy OafSassy (if a bit hipster) clothing and awesome stationary. First spotted on the awesome Blog and Buy Sale – which if you are ever stuck for present ideas is a great place to commence searching.

2) T-Shirt – design and print by Mimi Leung, discovered and purchased at Pick Me Up. Bright Bold and Brilliant.

3) Print – It has been a running joke for weeks that I might purchase another synth for his set up, so I got a Korg, a Roland and a MiniMoog in on print. Just don’t ask me which one is which. Print by Jan Skácelík via Esty

4) Guitar Picks, by David Shrigley, purchased at his current exhibition at the Hayward Gallery which is worth a visit. Just incase you can’t see it in the picture, they say TWAT, and BACK IN 5 MINS. :D

Now go forth and buy!
